Books of poetry, haikai 俳諧, with pictures, published during the Edo period.
One of the oldest examples is the Meireki 明暦 era (1655-58) book called Inago いなご. The Kanbun 寛文 era (1661-73) books by the painter, illustrator, and poet Ryūho 立圃 (1599-1669) contained pictures created by Ryūho himself. More closely associated with the world of *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 was the Edo haikai world, represented by Enomoto Kikaku 榎本其角 (1661-1707), who produced witty and satirical works with text and pictures. An early example of these books is the Hyakufukuju 百福寿, compiled by Kikuoka Tenryō 菊岡沾涼 in 1717.
Another example is the 1730 Chichi no on 父の恩, a publication of poems to commemorate the 27th anniversary memorial service for the actor Ichikawa Danjūrō 1 初世市川団十郎. This book contained colored woodblock prints by the painter and lacquer artist Ritsuō 笠翁 (Ogawa Haritsu 小川破笠, 1663-1747). Later, in the An'ei 安永 and Tenmei 天明 eras (1772-89), there were also works by the painter and print designer Toriyama Sekien 鳥山石燕 (1712-88).
