Lit. picture horse hall. Also called emaden 絵馬殿; emadokoro 絵馬所 or gakuden 額殿 (frame hall), because originally the pictures were shaped like a frame.
Emadō are halls filled with *ema 絵馬 of various sizes. It is not clear when special buildings were erected for ema.
Extant examples date only from the proto-modern period: Yasaka Jinja 八坂神社 Emaden, Kitano Tenmangū 北野天満宮 Emadokoro (1608), both in Kyoto; Kotohiragū 金刀比羅宮 Emadō (1748), in Kagawa Prefecture.
