A heavy horizontal member attached to the outside of the veranda framework over the veranda struts *tsuka 束. Its top surface is even with the veranda floor boards running the length of the veranda. This arrangement is called kure-en 榑縁. Engamachi, since they are flush with the veranda floor boards, differ from *enkazura 縁葛, which are supporting beams set between the struts. If storm shutters *amado 雨戸 are intended to be used to enclose the veranda, a single groove is made on top of the engamachi on which the shutters can be pulled out of the storage cupboard *tobukuro 戸袋, and pushed or pulled along the groove one after the other.
