Also written 焔髪. Upstanding hair in the shape of flames. This accompanies an expression of anger *funnusō 忿怒相, and is found on other frightening Buddhist images including *myōō 明王, Devas *ten 天, and shinshōzō 神将像. Gundari Myōōzō 軍荼利明王像 and Daiitoku Myōōzō 大威徳明王像 (wood, 9th century) in Tōji Kōdō 東寺講堂, Kyoto, are good examples.
