1 A matting made of straw, rushes, sedge, or cattails woven in a spiral pattern that was used for bedding, to cover areas of a wooden or earthen floor and as an individual seat. The Garyō shōzokushō 雅亮装束抄 states that the mats were finished off with different colored bindings and decorated with special patterns that indicated the rank of the people using them: the dainagon's 大納言 mat had a purple chrysanthemum and cloud design, kōraimon 高麗紋; the chūnagon's 中納言 mat had an exquisite border of the kōrai pattern *kōraiberi 高麗縁; the saishō's 宰相 mat had a lovely yellow kōrai pattern.
