1 Also written 葺返. A board which projects diagonally out from the top of a statue canopy, *tengai 天蓋, to create a fine finish. Similar to a cornice. Example: the canopy over the Tachibana bunin zushi 橘夫人厨子 (8th century, miniature shrine) in the *Kondō 金堂 at Hōryūji 法隆寺 in Nara.

2 Two curved panels on the left and right sides of the rim, *shikoro 錣, of a helmet, *kabuto 冑. The shape and decoration of the fukikaeshi varies. The most traditional form is where the upper ridges, hachitsuki-no-ita 鉢付の板, of the rim curl backward, leaving only the outer band, hishinui-no-ita 菱縫の板, hanging down.
