Lit. grouped or varying numbered lattice. Lattice or small beams arranged to form patterns in transoms, *ranma 欄間, on latticed doors or windows in gable pediments, and even to form coffers in a ceiling, *gōtenjō 格天井. The lattice may be set either horizontally, vertically, or in a crisscross pattern. Fukiyose gōshi are not always evenly spaced. There are variations in the ratios between individual lattices as well as between groups to form decorative patterns. Many varieties of patterns are also found in the framework of *shōji 障子.
