Also called fumi-ita 踏板. The horizontal surface, known as the tread, on steps or stairs. The board, plank, or carefully cut stone steps upon which the foot is placed when ascending or descending a stairway. Some steps were hewn from logs and shaped into single, thick, square steps or slightly rectangular steps. Sometimes roughly shaped stone steps were used. Centuries-old footsteps have a noticeably worn tread.
