1 A Tang Dynasty term for rough sketches or underdrawings made with gesso powder, *gofun 胡粉, retraced with ink. These sketches were often collected into notebooks and used by later artists for reference or study.
2 Generally, an artist's notes and sketches for a larger painting. Funpon include faithful reproductions of originals as well as rough copies in reduced sizes. Most funpon were produced in ink only, *hakubyō 白描, but some include color or color notations. Good examples in Buddhist art are *Zuzōshō 図像抄 or collections of iconographic records compiled for the study of Esoteric Buddhism, mikkyō 密教.
