Fusō meigaden 扶桑名画伝

Biography of Famous Painters in Japan, a comprehensive mid-19th-century biography of painters. Supplemented and revised by Kurokawa Harumura 黒川春村 (1799-1866; well known specialist in Kokugaku 国学, the study of classical Japanese literature) at the request of Hori Naotada 堀直格 (1606-1880), who first outlined the work. The work bears Naotada's preface of 1854 as well as Harumura's preface of 1859, but it was not published until 1899 when included in Shiryō taikan 資料大観, issued by Tetsugaku Shoin 哲学書院. Comprising 53 volumes, Fusō meigaden gives information on 1,874 Japanese painters. Some sections have been lost, but most of the original text is preserved in the National Diet Library, Tokyo.
