fuza 趺坐

Abbreviation of either the *kekka fuza 結跏趺坐 (full-lotus posture) or the *hanka fuza 半跏趺坐 (half-lotus posture). Two of the most fundamental seated postures of a Buddhist image, usually signifying meditation. Both legs are folded and either both feet rest on the thighs of the opposite legs (full-lotus posture) or one foot rests over the thigh of the opposite leg while the other foot remains under the opposite leg (half-lotus posture). Many Buddha, *nyorai 如来, and bodhisattva, *bosatsu 菩薩, images maintain this position, and it is the standard posture for Zen meditation.
