A beam that spans the peripheral structural zone *geya 下屋, created by extending the roof down beyond the central main frame *jōya 上屋, in traditional vernacular houses *minka 民家, with thatched roofs. The geyabari is tenoned into the side of the *jōyabashira 上屋柱, the post at the interface between jōya and geya, at one end, and either jointed to the top of the *geyabashira 下屋柱, the post defining the outer edge of the geya, or lapped over the eave purlin *geyageta 下屋桁, at the other. It varies in length from one bay *ken 間, just under 2 m, to under half a bay. Also called a *tsunagibari 繋梁, particularly when its length is half a bay or less. In the vicinity of Osaka the term is also applied to the eave purlin.
