Also sōgishi 僧祇支 (Sk: Sankaksika). A robe worn by Buddhist priests under the *kesa 袈裟 (outer robe). Often found on Buddhist images of the Asuka period. The gishi was worn diagonally; usually over the left shoulder and under the right arm, but occasionally it was worn the other way round. An example can be seen on the Hōryūji Kudara Kannonzō 法隆寺百済観音像, Nara, thought to have been made in the Asuka period.
