Lit. hakama 袴 brushing stone. A name for the front stone in a stone grouping arranged around a low basin *tsukubai 蹲踞 in tea gardens *roji 露地, of the rustic style, *sōan 草庵 . Also called the tsukubai-ishi 蹲踞石, kagami-ishi 蹲石, and *mae-ishi 前石, this stone is placed directly in front of the water basin. The name hakamazuri-ishi derives from the fact that tsukubai basins are very low, so when crouching to scoop water the user's divided skirts, hakama, would brush against the stone.
