Also yatsunaka-no-korobi 八中の転. The method used to determine the incline of the main posts of a *torii 鳥居. For example, to determine the incline of a post, if a square drawing is made of the exact size of its horizontal cross section, and the corners are cut by diagonal lines, an octagon results. The angle of incline is decided by the distance between the corner (a) and the point where the diagonal line (b) touches the edge of the square.
