Lit. half column. Also katabutabashira 片蓋柱 (half-covered pillar). The half visible column on the exterior or interior curtain walls of traditional buildings. The thickness of the wall and the position of the wall in relation to the columns varies. Depending on these two factors, the exposed part of the column may be more or less than half exposed. Only the visible part is called hanbashira.
