hankirizuma-zukuri 半切妻造

Also called hakamagoshi yane 袴腰屋根, or kabutoyane 兜屋根. A style of roof similar to the hipped roof *yosemune-zukuri 寄棟造. However, the chief difference is that instead of the gable ends of the roof flowing downward to meet the eaves of the long sides of the roof parallel to the ridge at the front and back, the gable sides of the roof are cut very short to form a very short triangular section. Seen from the front or rear, the silhouette of the roof forms a trapezoidal shape. The reason for the short hips on the gable ends is derived from the need for windows for both light and ventilation in the attic area which is used for storage or extra rooms. Farmers in the northern, eastern, and central parts of Japan often used this style of roof and covered it with thatch.
