A ceiling which is embellished with wooden squares of different kinds placed in a checker-board pattern. The ribs of a coffered ceiling *gō tenjō 格天井, are omitted in the harichigae tenjō ceiling. The wood most often used includes zelkova keyaki 槻, camphor kusunoki 楠木, Japanese horse chestnut tochi 栃, and mulberry kuwa 桑, all of which have beautiful grains that make them highly valued.
