A thin (1.5 cm+), flat wooden frame glued to silk to stabilize it while it is being painted *eginu 絵絹 and to prevent it from stretching or shrinking when sizing *dōsa 礬水 is added. By stretching the silk taut, the frame also renders the material transparent so that an underdrawing placed beneath it is visible and can be copied directly onto the silk.
