Aristocratic Dwellings
One type of window used in a shoin style room *shoin-zukuri 書院造. A window with a sliding shutter *shōji 障子 and transom *ranma 欄間, flush against the wall at right angles to the end of an alcove *tokonoma 床の間 in the corner of the room. The desk and shelves often used in the shoin style are eliminated.
