Also hōfukuzō 法服像. Lit. portrait in religious (i.e. Buddhist) appearance. A portrait of a person who has taken Buddhist orders and wears Buddhist canonical robes. This term is used for an image of a person who has retired from secular life and entered the priesthood, but it is not used for the portrait of a priest who does not have a previous secular status. The painting by Gōshin 豪信 made in 1338 of the tonsured Emperor Hanazono 花園 (1297-1348) kept at Chōfukuji 長福寺 in Kyoto is a well-known example. In contrast, the term *zokutaizō 俗体像 is applied to the portraits of lay people in formal secular dress.
