Lit. thorn tree fortress. A simple and usually temporary fortress surrounded by thorn trees or briar bushes to defend it from attack. The term first appears in Hitachi no kuni no fudoki 常陸の国風土記 (Hitachi Topography) dated early 8th century, making it one of the earliest recorded examples of Japanese fortification.
