irigawabashira 入側柱

Also called moyabashira 母屋柱 or 身舎柱. Pillars that are erected inside and parallel to the pillars positioned on the perimeter of a building *kawabashira 側柱. In temple buildings, these pillars surround the central core *moya 母屋 and separate it from the aisle-like area *hisashi 廂 that may exist on any or all four sides. They also support the purlins in the roof structure. Residential architecture styles *shinden-zukuri 寝殿造, for example, which occasionally have surrounding aisles, call the inner pillars irigawabashira. Furthermore, ordinary residences with an enclosed veranda-like space also call the interior pillars that mark this space off from the core of the dwelling irigawabashira.
