1 A hearth *ro 炉 excavated in the surface of an earth-floored area *doma 土間, or set into the surface of a raised timber floor in the food preparation structures of aristocratic (kizoku 貴族) and warrior class (bushi 武士) residences from the Heian period to the end of the medieval period.

2 In vernacular houses *minka 民家 of the Edo period in the more remote parts of the Kinki 近畿 region, a term for a hearth set in a raised floor.
