jinbaori　陣羽織

Campaign jacket. A short garment worn over armor. Based on European prototypes introduced by the Portuguese at the end of the Muromachi period, early examples were made of hemp, asa 麻, or heavy cotton to protect against the cold or rain encountered in battle. As early as the Momoyama period, military leaders often regarded them as a type of fashion, and many elaborate designs were created. By the Edo period jinbaori were largely decorative overgarments worn on outdoor occasions. Silk, woolens, and velvet were commonly used fabrics.
