Roofing Tiles
A layered petal motif with one or more petals superimposed one on top of another. It is found on some pendants *gatō 瓦当, of semi-cylindrical, eave-end roof tiles *nokimarugawara 軒丸瓦, made during the Nara period. One example of jūben was unearthed at the site of the ruined Katagiharadera 樫原寺 in Kyoto, and suggests a strong influence from a type of roof tile found in the Korean kingdom of Koguryo (present day North Korea), which ended in 668. Another more elaborate type was produced in Okayama Prefecture and distributed from there.
