A hanging translucent screen *shōji 障子 that is constructed with a light wooden frame in which rails and muntins are set. This frame is then covered with translucent paper. Kakeshōji are often hung in small windows, especially in single lath windows *shitajimado 下地窓, in place of sliding screens hikishōji 引障子. Hanging shōji are suspended by bent nails hammered into the wall above the window to the right and left. Because kakeshōji are very lightweight, a nail is also placed bottom-center to hold them firmly in place. Example: Nejikago no seki 捻駕籠の席, Aichi Prefecture (hanging shōji over *bokusekimado 墨蹟窓 in the alcove).
