Lit. square lattice. Lattice that is square in cross section. A single section of lattice is called renjiko 連子子. The lattice may be set as individual muntins or arranged in groups. Square muntins may also be placed at an angle with spaces between. Instead of square lattice, diamond or lozenge shapes *hishiko 菱子 may be used. Lattice is used in window openings or in transoms *ranma 欄間. The lattice is set into the holes in the frames that have the same shape as the lattice. Example: Hōryūji *Kyōzō 法隆寺経蔵 (8th century), *renjimado 連子窓 (lattice windows) in Nara.
