Also kamagami 釜神. The tutelary deity of the hearth or cooking range *kamado 竃, and by extension of the kitchen. Found in parts of Tōhoku 東北, especially Miyagi, Iwate, and Fukushima Prefectures. A mask of his features, made of wood or occasionally of clay, was often affixed to a beam *hari 梁, or to the freestanding post *dokuritsubashira 独立柱, closest to the kamado at the rear of the earthfloored area *doma 土間, in farmhouses in Miyagi Prefecture. Also called *kamaotoko 釜男 (cauldron male).
