A ceiling on which layered paper has been pasted. The bottom, middle, and top layers of paper cover the area between the muntins and on occasion cover the entire area, including the muntins. If the entire ceiling in one room is papered, pictures are drawn on the paper and gold dust scattered. In some rooms only the ceilings of the alcove *tokonoma 床の間, and the side alcove *tokowaki 床脇, have paper pasted on them.
