Ch: Han Wudi (159-87 BC). Lit. Emperor Wu of Han. The seventh emperor of the Former Han (Jp: Zenkan 前漢), who ruled from 141-87 BC. Many well-known Chinese historical figures were pulled into his political and cultural orbit, including Su Wu (Jp: So Bu 蘇武) and Li Ling (Jp: Ri Ryō 李陵; see *So Ri kestubetsu 蘇李訣別), Zhu Maichen (Jp: *Shu Baishin 朱買臣), and Dongfang Shuo (Jp: *Tōbō Saku 東方朔). Wudi is associated also with the Queen Mother of the West (Ch: Xiwangmu; Jp: Seiōbo 西王母; see *Seiōbo Tō'ōfu 西王母・東王父) and sometimes is included in paintings of her. The emperor was portrayed in the didactic painting theme Mirror of Good and Bad Emperors *teikan-zu 帝鑑図 and also in formal portraits. One such portrait by Kano Tan'yū 狩野探幽 (1602-74) shows Wudi together with the Queen Mother of the West as well as his minister Zhang Bofang (Jp: Chō Hakubō 張伯房).
