Guide to Chinese Style Painting. A late 18th century treatise on *nanga 南画 by Tatebe Ryōtai 建部凌岱 (1719-74); revised by Ryōtai's disciple Kōdai 鴻臺 and issued in 1776. The first section discusses the rules of landscape painting, the four noble plants *shikunshi 四君子, figures in landscape, and coloring landscape; the second section discusses rules for painting orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemum, plum, and stones. Short explanations accompany illustrations. In the theoretical preface, Ryōtai makes a distinction between literati painting *bunjinga 文人画 and professional artisans *eshi 絵師. It is published in Sakazaki Tan 坂崎坦, ed., Nihon garon taikan 日本画論大観 vol. 1, 877-890.
