Also written 広東, 漢島, 漢渡, and 閑島. A fine silk striped woven material, perhaps named after the Japanese pronunciation of Canton in China. Imported from Ming dynasty China in the 15th century, it was admired by tea adepts along with *kinran 金襴 and *donsu 緞子 as a highly respected fabric *meibutsugire 名物裂. Cotton striped material imported from India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East was also called kantō. Famous types are called Yazaemon 弥三右衛門, Aoki 青木, Mochizuki 望月, Funakoshi 船越, Hino 日野, and Yahyōe 弥兵衛.
