A bright yellowish-orange color. Named after the yellow dye lily flower kanzō 萓草. Kanzō-iro dye was produced by mixing yellow gardenia *kuchinashi 支子 with madder red *akane-iro 茜色 or safflower *beni 紅, or by using a sappan wood *suō 蘇芳 dye mordanted with alum. The color name kanzō-iro has been used since the Heian period and appears in Genji monogatari 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji).
