Folk Dwellings
A part of a house in the vicinity of the kitchen; *katte 勝手, *daidokoro 台所, that often included the family dining space, and other service rooms such as the bath furo 風呂, the food preparation area, and the earth-floored area *doma 土間. Often used to distinguish the service zone from reception rooms and in the case of larger houses, service rooms from the living rooms of senior family members. Particularly used with respect to the late Edo period houses of middle ranking warriors, chūkyū bushi jūtaku 中級武士住宅.
