General Terms
A threshold or sill. A horizontal timber without grooves, positioned beneath an entrance so that a door or gate closes flush with the threshold. Historically, it was often a removable member, but it is more common today for the kehanashi to be firmly attached. Examples are found in a row-house gateway nagayamon 長屋門 (see *nagaya 長屋) and the residential gate *kidomon 木戸門.
