Also read motodori. Hair tied on top of the head in a topknot. The same meaning as *hōkei 宝髻 where the character 宝 hō is used as a respectful prefix. However in practice it appears that motodori is used more widely than hōkei to refer to all hairstyles found on Buddhist figures ; rakei 螺髻 (snail hair), suikei 垂髻 (hanging hair), *sōkei 双髻 (double chignon) etc., and to features of the head like the *nikkei 肉髻 (protuberance on head).
