Joints
1 A tenon *hozo ほぞ and mortise *hozoana ほぞ穴 joint in which the tenon is indented like a neck. The indentation allows the tenon to slide into the mortise enabling the protruding parts to hug the neck, kubi 首, like a collar. This joint is used to join an upright member to a ground sill.
2 The neck part of the long handle that is connected to the dipper of a tea ceremony ladle *hishaku 柄杓. In this case it is called mitsu-no-sumi 三の角 (3-cornered joint).
