Metal statue. A variety of metals were used for statues in Japan, including iron and silver, but bronze *dōzō 銅像 and gilt bronze kondōzō 金銅像 images were the most common. Methods used include casting *chūkin 鋳金, statues hammered in relief on a metal plate *oshidashibutsu 押出仏, and hairline engraving *kebori 毛彫. There were many different techniques of casting, such as the lost-wax method *rōgata 蝋型, and a large number of materials which can be used to make the casting mold, for example stone, clay, or sand. Clay was a particularly versatile material for making molds for metal casting. Some of the techniques which used clay included: *sōgata 総型, where the surface pattern was engraved on the inside of the clay mold; *fumigaeshi 踏返, where a simple, flat object was reproduced by covering with clay to make a mold; and warikomegata 割込型, where a clay mold, made over a model, was removed from the model in pieces and reassembled for casting.
