Lit. cut stones. Angular, free cut stones that can be a paved walkway *nobedan 延段 and used either as independent stepping stones, kiri-ishi no tobi-ishi 切石の飛石, or as the stone paving *kiri-ishijiki 切石敷 part of a paved walkway. Kiri-ishi are generally used for formal paths. The priest's quarters, Honbō 本坊 at Daitokuji 大徳寺 in Kyoto, employs kiri-ishi no tobi-ishi, while the kiri-ishijiki at Katsura Rikyū 桂離宮 in Kyoto is well known for its clean elegance.
