An opening set into the second-story floor of a storehouse *dozō 土蔵 or shop. It is fitted with a trapdoor that can be raised to pass stored materials down to the first floor or vice-versa. If the upper story has a good light source, the trapdoor may also be raised to let in more light and allow air to circulate to the first floor. A lattice cover is also used for this purpose during the hot, humid summers.
