A pictorial subject taken from "The Rose Plum" Kōbai (red plum blossoms), Chapter 43 of Genji monogatari 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji). Kōbai is a younger brother of the late *Kashiwagi 柏木 and the husband of *Makibashira 真木柱, the widow of Prince Hotaru, Hyōbukyō no Ｍiya 兵部卿宮 by whom she had one daughter. "The Rose Plum" chapter centers around Prince Niou's (see *Niou no Miya 匂宮) interest in this princess. The most frequently depicted scene shows Kōbai's young son at the royal palace, waiting with a branch of red plum blossoms and a letter from his father to present to Niou.
