Woodblock prints *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 with children as their subject. No adults are depicted and most of the prints are of children at play. These are different from omocha-e 玩具絵 in that kodomo-e were made for adults to look at and omocha-e were for children to enjoy. A few kodomo-e were painted in the 17th century, but they became popular in the mid-18th century. Most print artists, such as Ishikawa Toyonobu 石川豊信 (1711-85) and Torii Kiyonaga 鳥居清長 (1752-1815), printed kodomo-e. Many fine prints of this genre were designed by Utagawa Kuniyoshi 歌川国芳 (1797-1861) in the mid-19th century.
