koji sansui 故事山水

Ch: gushi shanshui. Paintings depicting episodes of quasi-historical accounts, koji 故事 where literary or historical subjects are placed in a landscape setting, sansui 山水. When the human figures are rendered bigger and fewer landscape elements are included, the compositions are termed figure painting of historical or legendary stories *kojijinbutsuga 故事人物画. Examples include poetic themes such as the Red Cliff *Sekiheki 赤壁 by Su Dongpo (Jp:*So Tōba 蘇東坡) and Song of the Lute *Biwakō 琵琶行 by Bai Letian (Jp: *Haku Rakuten 白楽天).
