Lit. native Japanese culture. The term is used for the culture which arose during the mid-Heian period (also known as *Fujiwara jidai 藤原時代) as opposed to the tōfū bunka 唐風文化 (Tang style culture) which describes the culture imported from Tang China during the previous periods. The terms "yamatoburi やまとぶり" and "kuniburi くにぶり" are also used to indicate something Japanese as opposed to Chinese. Japanese kana 仮名 syllabary literature was developed during this period as well as other innovative achievements in all areas of art and culture.
