kokuso-urushi 木屎漆

Also kokuso 木屎. A paste that was made by adding wood powder, or plant fibres like hemp, to a mixture of flour and lacquer. Kokuso-urushi was used on dry lacquer statues *kanshitsu 乾漆 for modeling and building up a statue's surface. It was also used to reinforce joints, mold details of hair and ornaments, and fill unwanted hollows in the wooden core. Kokuso-urushi served as a filler and repair material to treat cracks or damage in any lacquerware vessel.
