General Terms

A structural framework for a roof that has a gable pediment arranged in a similar structure as the bottle shaped strut kōryō kaerumata taiheizuka 虹梁蟇股大瓶束. In this case, frog-leg struts *kaerumata 蟇股 are used on top of the rainbow beams *kōryō 虹梁, instead of bottle struts *taiheizuka 大瓶束. The simplest form of this framework uses one rainbow beam and a single frog-leg strut centered to carry the ridge. If two rainbow beams are used, one above the other, and separated by frog-leg struts, the upper rainbow beam carries the frog-leg strut through which the ridge passes. In this case the assemblage is called *nijūkōryō kaerumata 二重虹梁蟇股. This type of support was very popular from the 8th century onward, especially for temple buildings. Bottle struts were introduced with the establishment of the Zen 禅 sect during the 13th century. Example: Hōryūji Tōin Denpōdō 法隆寺東院伝法堂 (8th century) Nara
