A trowel chisel. A type of paring chisel *tsukinomi 突鑿, with the cutting blade bent in the shape of a trowel. Like the *marunomi 丸鑿, the cutting-tip is ridged and has a small blade-angle. Both edges are very thin. The blade-width ranges from 6 mm to 18 mm. The kotenomi is used for gouging out the base of dovetail grooves which cannot be shaved with a housing plane, shakuriganna 決鉋, and for carving the bottom of mortises. See *aritsugi 蟻継.
