Also *koma 小間. Lit. a small room. An old name for a small sized tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室. During the Muromachi period, tea ceremony rooms had six or eight mats rokujō 六畳 or hachijō 八畳, or 4 1/2 mats *yojōhan 四畳半. By the mid 16th century, the firebox was set into the floor and had a ditch reed shelf, yoshidana 葭棚. From that time the room was usually 4 1/2 mats or smaller. The smaller tea ceremony rooms were called kozashiki. Examples: 4 1/2 mats: Daitokuji Gyokurin'in Kasumidoko-no-seki 大徳寺玉林院霞床席 (1742); 3 mats: Daitokuji Jukōin Kan'in-no-seki 大徳寺聚光院閑隠席 (1741) in Kyoto; 2 mats: Taimadera Nakanobōseki 当麻寺中之坊席 (1645-1651) in Nara; 2 mats plus 1 smaller: Daitokuji Shinjuan Teigyokuken 大徳寺真珠庵庭玉軒 (early 17th century) in Kyoto; 1 mat plus 1 smaller mat: Kanden'an 菅田庵 (late 18th century) in Shimane Prefecture.
