1 Lit. Comb shape. A semicircular shape、or part of a semicircle, often with trimmed corners. Used in windows *kushigatamado 櫛形窓, transoms *kushigata ranma 櫛形欄間, and walls *kushigatabei 櫛形塀. Sometimes an opening of this shape is made in an outer wall and filled with thin bamboo lath intertwined with vine or with lattice *renji 連子. Examples can be seen at Urasenke Kan'untei 裏千家寒雲亭 and the Kyoto Gosho Seiryōden 京都御所清涼殿, both in Kyoto.

3 A tool for cutting wooden screws.


4 Boards used instead of sash bars in the moldings, katawaku 型枠, for pillars with a round or asymmetrical cross-section, and the inner moldings for round silos.
